Sports-Related Concussion

Sports concussion neuropsychological evaluation in Los Angeles with baseline testing, post-concussion assessment, and return-to-play/return-to-learn guidance.

Young Athletes

A growing concern for parents is sports-related brain injury and concussion in young athletes of all ages. The tests that we use are sensitive to the effects of concussion and are used by most experts in the field, especially our measures of attention, processing speed and reaction time. We encourage kids to participate in sports, and we recommended obtaining a baseline neurocognitive evaluation before the season starts. The preseason/baseline data can then help parents, coaches and other medical professionals make better-informed decisions regarding a youth’s readiness to play again in the event of a head injury or concussion.

Former Athletes

We evaluate former athletes who are experiencing cognitive and/or emotional difficulties that might be linked to playing contact sports in high school, college or professionally.

What a Concussion Evaluation Includes

Our neuropsychological concussion evaluations assess the cognitive domains most often affected by head injury:

  • Attention and concentration — tracking deficits that persist beyond acute symptoms
  • Processing speed and reaction time — sensitive early indicators of brain function change
  • Memory and learning — identifying encoding and retrieval difficulties
  • Executive functioning — planning, inhibition, and cognitive flexibility
  • Emotional and behavioral functioning — anxiety, irritability, and sleep disruption common after concussion

Baseline Testing

Preseason baseline evaluations provide a personalized reference point for your child’s normal cognitive performance. If a concussion occurs during the season, post-injury scores can be compared directly against the baseline to guide return-to-play decisions with objective data rather than symptom reports alone.

Return-to-Play and Academic Accommodations

Post-concussion evaluations support both return-to-play protocols and return-to-learn plans. Many student-athletes need temporary academic accommodations — reduced workload, extended deadlines, or a modified schedule — while the brain recovers. Our evaluation findings can document these needs for schools and coaches.
